Asim Munir US visit: US President Donald Trump has again claimed on Wednesday to have prevented catastrophic war between nuclear-armed India and Pakistan, while commending Field Marshal Asim Munir for his crucial contribution in de-escalating the situation.
Trump told reporters at the White House on Tuesday, “I put an end to the conflict between India and Pakistan. Since both nations possess nuclear weapons, they must cease. This man, Asim Munir, had a significant impact on Pakistan’s decision to end the war. I adore Pakistan. Modi is an amazing man, in my opinion. Last night, I had a conversation with him. We will now have a trade agreement with India.”
The president’s comments followed a phone call with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the G7 summit in Canada.
It was their first direct communication since the clash between the two South Asian nations that broke out along the Line of Control from May 7–10.
While praising both countries, Trump reaffirmed that his intervention kept things from getting out of hand. “I prevented a conflict between India and Pakistan, two powerful nuclear-armed states.
He went on to say, “I don’t think anyone ever wrote a story about it,” expressing his disappointment at his role’s lack of media attention.
Indian officials have flatly rejected any U.S. mediation, even as Trump continues to use his diplomatic clout. According to a press release from Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, Prime Minister Modi told Trump that there was “no talk at any stage” about a trade agreement or a ceasefire mediated by the United States during the conflict.
