GUJRAT: The Department of Sociology at the University of Gujrat (UoG) organized a seminar, a third on the trot, as part of the ongoing ‘16 days of global activism campaign’ commissioned by the Women Development Department of the Government of Punjab under the UN initiative ‘Unite! Invest to Prevent Violence against Women and Girls’. The event aimed to focus on the elimination of violence against women in Pakistan.
Chairperson of the Sociology Department Dr Muhammad Shoaib, acting as a host, welcomed the distinguished guests.
Over 250 students and faculty members from various departments attended the seminar, where various speakers discussed important topics related to the issue. These included the importance of bridging the financial and economic literacy gap between men and women, promoting a life course learning approach to manage emotions, in addition to promoting better relations within the domestic sphere.
Additionally, a sociological framework was presented to analyse violence against women in Pakistan through historical, cultural, structural, and critical perspectives. The seminar also provided practical tips for female commuters and urban dwellers and outlined the laws for the protection of women in Pakistan against violence and abuse. Those who addressed the seminar included Dr Abre-Rehmat Quratul Ain, Dr Noreena Kausar, Mr Shamraiz Iqbal, Dr. Shazia Kiyani, and Ms. Mobeena Ghazanfar, a lawyer from the Lahore High Court.
At the end of the seminar, souvenirs were presented to the speakers. There was a question-and-answer session followed by concluding remarks from the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Prof. Dr Faisal Mahmood Mirza.
