Indian cricket team’s former captain Virat Kohli has declared his sudden retirement from Test cricket, which shocked the cricketing world. The 36-year-old took the decision a month before India’s planned tour of England, leaving the fans and pundits speechless.
Kohli scored a staggering 9,230 runs in 111 Test matches with an average of 46.8. He stands fourth currently on India’s all-time list of Test run-scorers behind only Sachin Tendulkar (15,921), Rahul Dravid (13,265), and Sunil Gavaskar (10,122).
In a heartfelt post on social media, Kohli reminisced: “It was 14 years ago when I first donned the whites for India in Test cricket. I never knew where this format would lead me. It tested me, honed me, and taught me lessons about life that will remain with me for all time.”
“I’m leaving this format behind – it wasn’t easy, but it was the right thing to do,” he added. “I’ve given Test cricket everything I have, and the game has given me so much in return.”
This news comes hot on the heels of Rohit Sharma’s recent Test retirement and leaves big questions over the future of India’s Test batting order.
Kohli not only stood out as a batsman but also revolutionized Indian Test cricket as a bold captain. Kohli led India to a historic Test series win in Australia and sustained the number one position in Test rankings for a long time.
