Today, millions of Muslims worldwide, including in Pakistan, are commemorating Youm-e-Ashura, the 10th day of Muharram, to honor Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA), the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), and the other martyrs who sacrificed their lives in the battle of Karbala.
Across the country, processions are underway, symbolizing significant elements such as the Alam (standard), Zuljanah (Imam Hussain’s horse), and Tazias. These are accompanied by Majalis (mourning gatherings) where religious scholars and Zakireen are discussing the unparalleled sacrifices of the Karbala martyrs.
Religious leaders are reflecting on the moral lessons imparted by Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) and explaining the tragic events of Karbala. To ensure public safety, robust security measures have been deployed across Pakistan during these events.
In Lahore, the main Ashura procession began from Nisar Haveli at Mochi Gate, following its traditional path, and will conclude at Karbala Gamay Shah after the Maghrib prayers.
Both federal and provincial authorities have enforced strict security protocols for Ashura observances. High-security zones have been established in cities such as Karachi, Lahore, Peshawar, and Quetta. As part of the security plan, commercial areas along procession routes have been closed, and traffic has been rerouted to avoid disruptions.
Law enforcement agencies have implemented a multi-layered security strategy, which includes extensive surveillance through CCTV cameras.
In Karachi and other regions of Sindh, additional precautions are being taken, including partial suspension of mobile phone services in certain areas. Sabeels (refreshment stalls offering water and milk) have also been set up for the convenience of the mourners.
